The Play's The Thing

An outdoor musical theatre experience like no other

Each May and June, the Mountain Play presents a spectacular production of one of your favorite Broadway musicals. Each show features professional actors, stunning special and visual effects and a 14 piece LIVE orchestra. Each season renowned director James Dunn treats audiences to a musically, magical experience on Mount Tamalpais.

You're sure to start the day in awe of the view and end your day with your toes tapping, in awe of the talent.

Plan Your Day on the Mountain!

The box office at the front gate opens at 9:00 am. The first bus from Mill Valley leaves at 10:00 am. You get up to the theatre easily in the morning because arrivals are spread out over the morning, but it takes longer for everyone to leave. Please do not bring your dog on the bus, or up to the mountain.
If you are first up on the bus you will receive a color coded ticket so you will be in the first groups to leave on the bus. If you come up on a later bus, you will have to wait for a later bus to leave. We have entertainment to make the wait easier. Consider taking the hike down to Mill Valley so you don't have to wait.

Before the Play

The musical isn't the only act

There's puppet shows and facepainting for kids before the show and musical entertainment while you wait to board the bus after the play.

We'll keep you entertained all day long.

Or, just relax and soak in the sights...

Getting Down the Mountain

Hike down
For those athletic patrons who want to take the scenic route to or from the theatre, hiking is a beautiful option.
Most of our hikers choose to take the bus up to the theatre, and then hike down afterwards.
The hike down is an easier one since the Mountain Play transports ice chests and other bulky items to "The Depot" in Mill Valley where you can retrieve your gear and hop on a shuttle back to your parked car. The last of these shuttles from downtown Mill Valley to the parking lots leaves at 9:00pm - so you can enjoy dinner in charming downtown Mill Valley. If you miss the last shuttle for any reason, you can always take a taxi to the parking area. While easier than the hike up to the theatre, it is still 7 miles and will take 2-2 1/2 hours. Please wear appropriate clothing and bring plenty of water. Click on the links below to download our directions and basic map for the hike down
